OXFORD STYLE WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE OXFORD SHOES

Oxford shoes are men's dress shoes characterized by a closed lacing system, and they exhibit a variety of expressions depending on differences in ornamentation, last shape, and material. We will introduce the appeal of Oxford shoes while touching on representative designs and their features, as well as considerations regarding comfort and construction.

【About Oxford Shoes】

Oxford shoes refer to men's dress shoes constructed with a closed lacing system.
While seemingly simple in structure, various designs exist within them, such as plain toe, straight tip, quarter brogue, semi-brogue, full brogue, wholecut, and Adelaide.
Additionally, the impression changes significantly depending on the upper material, last shape, and amount of ornamentation.
A long-nosed, sharp last can create a modern impression, while a short-nosed or rounded last can enhance a classic atmosphere.
Generally, plain toe and straight tip designs are considered more formal, and as ornamentation increases, they tend to become more casual.
However, in modern times, this boundary is not as strict as before, and they can be incorporated into a wide range of situations depending on the material and styling.
Oxford shoes also have significant characteristics in terms of comfort.
The closed lacing system allows for a firm hold of the midfoot and is designed to prevent forward slippage, making it a design that easily provides stability in terms of fitting.
In particular, designs with a seam on the instep create points that support the foot, which also affects comfort.
Furthermore, at Yuki Shirahama Bottier, we particularly emphasize the design of the lining, which is not visible from the outside, and employ several pattern design methods with different functionalities. Each design has properties such as reducing pressure points and preventing forward slippage, so we propose them according to the customer's preferences.
In addition, the pattern and thickness of the tongue also affect the wearing comfort, so we produce our shoes with this in mind.

【Types of Oxford Shoes】

■Plain Toe OxfordBespoke Plane-Toe Oxford in Dark Brown Calf Leather A contemporary almond toe last with a defined side wallBespoke Plane-Toe Oxford in Dark Brown Calf Leather A contemporary almond toe last with a defined side wall
Hand-sewn welted construction with all-dark-brown leather sole

This Oxford shoe features minimal ornamentation, with a seam only on the vamp.
Due to its simple structure, the beauty of the last shape, leather quality, and finish are strongly highlighted.
While fundamentally a formal design, it is widely used today, from formal to casual settings, through clever use of materials and styling.

■Straight Tip OxfordBespoke Straight-Tip Oxford in Black Calf Leather A slim and refined almond toe lastBespoke Straight-Tip Oxford in Black Calf Leather A slim and refined almond toe last

This design features a single seam across the toe cap.
It is often used in business and formal occasions such as ceremonies and funerals, making it one of the most versatile Oxford designs.

■Punched Cap Toe OxfordBespoke Punched Cap-Toe Oxford in Black Grain Leather A slim and refined almond toe lastBespoke Punched Cap-Toe Oxford in Black Grain Leather A slim and refined almond toe last

This design adds broguing (perforations) to the straight tip.
The perforations are called broguing or perforations. The cap may also feature straight cutting or pinking.
Pinking is a cutting method that gives the edge of the upper a jagged finish, sometimes called gimping.
It retains the formality of a straight tip while presenting a slightly softer impression.

■Quarter Brogue OxfordBespoke Quarter-Brogue Oxford in Light Brown Lama Leather A modern chisel-toe last with a defined side wallBespoke Quarter-Brogue Oxford in Light Brown Lama Leather A modern chisel-toe last with a defined side wall
Hand-sewn welt construction with all light brown leather sole

This design features perforations along all design lines of the upper, including the cap, vamp, and counter.
While having a classic impression, it can be worn with a relatively clean and neat feel.

■Semi Brogue OxfordBespoke Semi-Brogue Oxford in Dark Brown Calf Leather A softed chisel toe last with raised side-wallBespoke Semi-Brogue Oxford in Dark Brown Calf Leather A softed chisel toe last with raised side-wall
Hand-sewn welted construction with all-brown leather sole

This design adds a medallion to the toe of a quarter brogue.
It is more decorative and is used for slightly more casual purposes than a quarter brogue.

■Full Brogue OxfordBespoke Full-Brogue Oxford in Light Brown Calf Leather A modern chisel-toe last with a defined side wallBespoke Full-Brogue Oxford in Light Brown Calf Leather A modern chisel-toe last with a defined side wall

This highly decorative design features pinking and broguing, with the toe seam in a wingtip style.
Although originating from country styles, it is widely used today with jacket and trousers outfits, among others.

■Wholecut OxfordBespoke Wholecut in Black Calf Leather A slim and refined almond toe lastBespoke Wholecut in Black Calf Leather A slim and refined almond toe last
Hand-sewn welted construction with all-black leather sole

This Oxford shoe is constructed from a single piece of leather.
Because there are few seams, the texture of the leather itself and the lines of the last stand out.
Due to the seamless design, it is not possible to follow the shape of the last in the pattern, requiring advanced lasting techniques.

Adelaide OxfordBespoke Full-Brogue Adelaide Oxford in Light Brown Leather A slim and refined almond toe lastBespoke Full-Brogue Adelaide Oxford in Light Brown Leather A slim and refined almond toe last
Hand-sewn welted construction with all light brown leather sole

The Adelaide Oxford is a design with curved seams around the lacing area.
Compared to designs like the straight tip Oxford where the forefoot and heel are separate parts, the Adelaide features soft, distinctive lines, creating an elegant atmosphere.
Due to its design characteristics, the vamp often consists of a large single piece extending from the vamp to the heel, so the texture and appearance of the leather significantly influence the final product.
Therefore, it is a design where the overall atmosphere of the shoe can easily change depending on the material selection and pattern balance.
While possessing classic elements, it avoids being overly linear, and today, it is used as an Oxford that pairs well not only with dress styles but also with jacket styles.
